Plastic straws are the 11th maximum founding trash inside the ocean. India generates about 15,342 tonnes every day (TED) of plastic waste. In the USA, approximately 500 million straws are used on an everyday basis, that’s enough straws to circle across the earth 2.5 times.

On seeing this increasing problem of plastic pollution, many individuals, groups, organizations are coming forward with the solution. Today we will see the story of a Professor who makes straws from coconut leaves, bags global orders worth Rs 6 Crore.

Saji Varghese, is an associate professor at the Department of English, Christ University, Bengaluru. Professor came across the thought of making straw coconut leaves when he noticed the coconut tree loses up to six of its leaves every year.

On seeing this increasing problem of plastic pollution, many individuals, groups, organizations are coming forward with the solution. Today we will see the story of a Professor who makes straws from coconut leaves, bags global orders worth Rs 6 Crore.

Saji Varghese, is an associate professor at the Department of English, Christ University, Bengaluru. Professor came across the thought of making straw coconut leaves when he noticed the coconut tree loses up to six of its leaves every year.

When he researched it, he found that these coconut leaves are burnt for disposal. On seeing no use and difficulty of disposal, he decided to create an eco-friendly product that can be used to eradicate the problem of plastic pollution.

He developed an eco-friendly product and started selling them at Rs 3-10/straw. After some time, when he introduced his product in the market, he started getting orders from different countries and produced more than 20 million straws.

How Eco-friendly Coconut Straw innovation started?

In 2018 his straw received a patent and now he sells his straw under the brand name, Sunbird Straw. Saji has an interest in the area of research and innovation. He has launched a start-up named ‘Blessing Palm’ to promote his biodegradable and eco-friendly innovations.

When he started the procedure of Straw making he observed a wax coming out from the coconut leaves. This wax is used to make the straws water repellent.  Straws are tested in all kinds of beverages, water, soda, bubble tea, etc. This straw is suitable for hotels and restaurants. Straw can last up to 6 hours. The size of the straw varies from 3mm to 13 mm.

Professor started this start-up with the vision of eradicating the issues of plastic pollution. Now he is not only solving the environmental problems but also creating employment opportunities for the people of rural communities. He sources his raw material from the rural areas and decided to provide employment opportunities to women. He has set up the branch of the set-up in the rural areas like Madurai, Kasargod, and Tuticorin, now more than 18 women are working under his start-up company.

Professor with his team has entered the Climate Launchpad Award in the Netherlands and got the award for Best Innovation for Social Impact against 45 countries. This helped them to enter the international market and helped them receive orders from several foreign countries.

‘Sunbird Straw’ professor’s straw has received Shreshta Udyami Guru Puraskar 2020 from the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) and the First Position at Start-Up Launchpad by the ASSOCHAM, New Delhi.
